Hey there lovely people, this is ME.

The person behind the camera.

So yes, I'm an Adelaide photographer AND a mother, and I work my biz around the ever unpredictable ebb and flow of family life (nothing like a challenge).

And yes, I am 'passionate' about documenting families and birth and the beauty of everyday ordinary SPECTACULAR moments. But aside from all of that, who am I and what makes me spin?

A hot cup of tea in the morning, made by one of my loves.

The feeling of warmth in the air around my bare skin.

Complete submergence in a body of water (but only if it's warm enough).

The evolution of a hundred thousand million art projects and all that they bring into our lives.

The warmth of the sun still present in a basket of washing, hours after it has been taken from the line.

A partner in life who picks up 50% of the load.

A fast paced walk and the freedom it brings.

Home grown oranges (home grown anything! I am a sucker for a good veggie swap..)

Single pot cooking solutions.

My children's ability to use anything as a playground.

The perfect imperfectness of every day.

Some notes on Birth Photography

So.. Why birth photography?

Of ALL the different genres that photography offers, why focus on birth? (Surely not for the glamour of on-call lifestyle).

The answer to this comes from my own experience, I would like to share a little of it here.

So here is some of my story..

Initially, birth was something I was afraid of. I felt it was risky, traumatic, painful, something talked about behind closed doors.

When I fell pregnant with my first, I thought hospital care would be the best and safest option. However my sister managed to talk me into meeting an amazing independent midwife (and the most beautiful soul) who completely changed my perspective on birth.

One of the ways that she did this was to share with me other women's stories every time she came to visit. Amazing stories, extraordinary stories, beautiful stories. Each story was so unique and special, and each story was told with such love, such beautiful supportive language, such confidence and such AWE.

Women did this, in their homes, every day. Each in their own unique way and and in their own time. Each birth has its own amazing story, and ALL stories are valid.

As a result, I completely embraced the idea of homebirth and I approached my birth with excitement, feeling strong and empowered.

And I did birth two babies at home, in our kitchen, surrounded and supported by my family. I wouldn’t give up this experience for anything.

As a birth photographer, I want to continue this work of normalising birth, telling women's stories and dispelling the fear. Above all, I want to support women’s choices around birthing.

Birth is such an incredible feat, and yet it happens every day. Women are AMAZING. The birthing journey requires so much of us. But most of all, it requires us to surrender and to find strength from deep within.

I think birth should be celebrated. I think that these stories that should be celebrated. They should be told and told and told again.

Documenting these stories is a way to help bring them forward, and to normalize birth, so that they can be shared and embraced and remembered. And so that other women can draw strength from them into their own birthing experience.

These moments are raw and real. These are true moments of strength and love and life.
